The Ask

Create a frictionless customer experience in the face of a competitive landscape

Our client, a large banking and financial services company, wanted to update its suite of Personal Financial Management (PFM) tools to make the customer experience more cohesive, especially across all devices, as well as to offer greater value to its customers.

They also wanted to stay competitive in a space that is growing exponentially due to the entrance of disruptors, including: Mint, Level Money, Moven, Tink, and Numbrs, among others. Our client was looking for a partner to evaluate the current market space and trends, design innovative concepts, test the proposed concepts, and iterate on designs based on that user testing.

The Solution

Leverage user testing to achieve a customer-centric solution

Macquarium proposed a project plan that kicked off with research on emerging industry trends to assess the competitive state of digital financial management. The resulting report detailed macro-trends, identified key market leaders, and defined the paradigms by which market disruptors were aggravating market share. We also looked at our client’s existing suite of tools to identify gaps and areas for improvement.

Using this research as the basis for innovation, Macquarium reimagined the functionality of the tools and conducted early “guerrilla” concept testing at our office in Atlanta in order to get first hand customer input. This helped the team to quickly identify the features people felt were valuable, as well as their friction points in the budgeting process, which is at the core of PFM adoption. The resulting key insights guided the creation of wireframes and a prototype, which was tested in a formal lab setting under a testing regimen that Macquarium helped design. We then completed further wireframe iterations and designs through collaborative working sessions with our client, and also made content strategy recommendations.

The result was the production of finalized wireframes and visual design explorations for the reimagined PFM experience across all devices. This project serves as the basis for our client to begin developing the reimagined PFM experience for a 2016 launch.

The end product evolved over the course of the engagement, but where we are today sets us up well for delivering the project and really reimagining the experience.
